World Police and Fire Games 2013 – Guide to What’s On

The countdown is on for the 2013 World Police and Fire Games which will be held from the 1st-10th of August in Belfast. The World Police & Fire Games is a biennial event for serving and retired police, fire, prison and border security officers. The Games are the third largest international multi-sport event in the world and will be the largest ever sporting event to take place in Northern Ireland.  Approximately 56 sports will be featured in the 2013 Games including archery, badmington, basketball, ice hockey and many more. As well as the traditional sports seen at most international multi-sport events such as athletics, swimming, cycling, rugby and football, the World Police & Fire Games offers some quite unique events such as the Ultimate FirefighterMuster and Toughest Competitor Alive!

We’ve put together a quick guide to some of the unmissable spectator events taking place.

Dodgeball - Queen’s University Sport Physical Education Centre (PEC)

The WPFG Dodgeball competition will take place on the 9th August and there will be a Charity event on the 10th August; entry to these events are free.

Ice Hockey 

Cheer on Northern Ireland’s very own team the NI Tridents as they compete in the 2013 Games. The Ice Hockey competition will take place in Dundonald Ice Bowl and the Odyssey Arena from July 25th – 9th August. For full details go to:

Toughest Competitor Alive – Bangor Sportsplex and Bangor Aurora Aquatic and Leisure Centre

Taking place from Monday 5th August to Thursday 8th August, TCA is multi-discipline event consisting of 8 phases which have to be completed within one day’s competition. The event is spread over 4 days to accommodate different age categories. Phases of the event are as follows: 5k Run, Shot Put, 100m Dash, 100m Swim, 20ft Rope Climb, Bench Press, Pull Ups and finally the Obstacle Course.

Ultimate Fire Fighter – Titanic Slipways

Head down to the iconic slipways from Tuesday 6th August to Thursday 8th for one of the 2013 games highlights.

Muster – Titanic Slipways

This is another spectator favourite, which will take place on Monday the 5th of August on the slipways.

Stair Race – Obel Building, Belfast

The stair race will take place on the 4th of August in the Obel building (Ireland’s tallest buidling).

Beach Volleyball – East Strand Portrush

Head up the beautiful North Coast for the beach volley ball competition, taking place on August 6th.

Dragon Boat – Lanyon Place, Belfast

Watch teams compete in the Dragonboat challenge from Friday August 2nd to Sunday August 4th.
